New Gateway to Jodhpur: A Terminal Building That Responds to Local Culture, Climate and Modern Travel Needs
The newly inaugurated terminal at Jodhpur Airport is designed to respond to the city’s growing role in Rajasthan’s tourism and strengthen its position as the gateway to Western Rajasthan, while drawing on its distinctive architectural and cultural identity. Inspired by the historic gateways, forts, and palaces that define Jodhpur’s built environment, the terminal incorporates the region’s architecture at the scale of contemporary infrastructure.
Accommodating 2 million passengers annually and spanning 2,52,000 sq ft, the terminal addresses rising passenger volumes through a planning strategy focused on operational efficiency and future scalability. Departures, arrivals, baggage handling, and service movement are carefully organised to support passenger flow. The architecture incorporates elements such as round domes, multifoil arches, and intricately carved facade and columns inspired by Rajputana architecture. Contemporary construction technologies and materials, such as GRC, reduce construction time and allow these traditions to be translated into a durable, high-performance building envelope. Interior spaces further reinforce a sense of place through regional artworks, murals, and craft traditions developed in collaboration with local artists. Curated murals depict regional motifs, including peacock imagery and scenes drawn from royal courts, themes frequently found in Rajasthani painting and decorative arts, introducing travellers to the essence of Rajasthan through a series of curated spatial and artistic interventions.
Sustainability is integrated throughout the project through passive environmental strategies, efficient building systems, and resource-monitoring technologies. Together, these approaches reduce operational demand while enhancing passenger comfort. Energy simulations indicate that the terminal consumes over 50% less energy than the benchmark for comparable airport buildings. The terminal positions itself not only as a transportation hub, but as a contemporary civic landmark that extends Jodhpur’s architectural legacy into a new era of mobility.
