Jammu, often referred to as the ‘City of Temples,’ is renowned for its ancient temples and Hindu shrines. Jammu Airport serves as a vital gateway to this historic and spiritual city. Reflecting the region’s cultural essence, the airport’s design incorporates elements inspired by the Mandala concept and the ancient temple planning principles of Vastu Purusha. The architectural aesthetics aim to create a harmonious blend of traditional symbolism and modern functionality, providing travellers with a unique and immersive experience.
The design of Jammu Airport ensures visual comfort by maximising natural daylight integration with artificial lighting. Thermal comfort is achieved through efficient heating and cooling systems with smart controls, while adequate insulation provides acoustic comfort by reducing unwanted background noise. Passive design strategies naturally control heat gain within the building, enhancing overall comfort.
The airport uses green-certified products, including recycled content in false ceilings and wall finishes and granite in exterior flooring. These materials enhance the aesthetic appeal and contribute to the building’s sustainability. The airport showcases local tradition through paper mache 3D sculptures of elephants and Tavdi decorated with traditional J&K motifs. Set against the backdrop of Jammu’s landscape, these artworks celebrate the region’s cultural heritage and add a unique, local flavour to the airport environment.
