Weaving the Spirit of the Eastern Himalayas into a Modern Aviation Landmark
Nestled in the lush foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, the Bagdogra Airport Terminal is envisioned as a gateway not just to Northeast India but also to its cultural richness, ecological sensitivity, and architectural legacy. This ambitious infrastructure project is designed to respond meaningfully to both the increasing demands of air traffic and the unique identity of the region it serves.
As one of the fastest-growing aviation hubs in eastern India, Bagdogra plays a crucial role in connecting the rest of the country to key destinations across Sikkim, North Bengal, and the Northeast. The new terminal’s design embraces this critical function while elevating the passenger experience through a contextually rooted architectural approach.
Taking cues from the local vernacular, the airport is conceptualised as a space that bridges tradition and progress. The form and spatial arrangement are inspired by the undulating topography and cascading hill settlements of the region. Large overhangs, sloped rooflines, and tiered landscaped terraces not only respond to the climate but also reinterpret traditional Himalayan architecture in a contemporary vocabulary.
